The Philippines

The Republic of the Philippines (Republika ng Pilipinas) is a country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago comprising of  7,107 islands divided into three main divisions, which are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. These are divided into 17 regions, 81 provinces, 144 cities, 1,491 municipalities, and 42,028 barangays. It is approximately 300,000 square kilometers and has a population of at least 99 million people. It is the seventh-most populated country in Asia and the 12th most populated country in the world.

The Capital City of the Philippines is Manila and is the second largest city of the country. It is one of the cities of the the National Capital Region, whose overall population is around 12 million.


The Philippines is gifted with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. There are many tourist spots to visit including the perfect cone, Mayon Volcano in Albay, the Rice Terraces in Banaue, the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, The White Sand Beach resorts in Boracay, the Hundred Island in Pangasinan and more.

The fun-loving and very hospitable Filipinos has a very rich culture because of colonization and trading with the countries such as Chinese, Japanese, Spain, United States of America. In June 12, 1898, they succeeded in winning the independence.


Language

Filipino and English are the official language in the Philippines.  Filipino is the standardized Tagalog, which is the widely spoken dialect in Metro Manila. There are about 171 known spoken dialects that people use including Tagalog, Cebuano, Bicol, Ilonggo, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Waray and more. It is the third largest English speaking country in the world.


The Climate

The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate and is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons: the hot dry season or summer (tag-init or tag-araw) from March to May, the rainy season (tag-ulan) from June to November; and the cool dry season (tag-lamig) from December to February. Temperatures usually ranges from 70 °F (21 °C) to 90 °F (32 °C). The coolest month is January and the warmest is May.

It is ranked in the top 5 countries in the world for natural disasters. Being in the typhoon belt, the country experiences approximately twenty (20) of typhoons or bagyo every year. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes (lindol) as well.

Although the Filipinos always experience a lot of natural disasters throughout the year, they are known for their durability and resiliency.


Health

Most of the national burden of health care is taken up by private health providers. There are an estimated 90,370 physicians or 1 per every 833 people, 480,910 nurses, 43,220 dentists, and 1 hospital bed per every 769 people. In 2001 there were about 1,700 hospitals, of which about 40% were government-run and 60% private. Cardiovascular diseases account for more than 25% of all deaths. According to official estimates, 1,965 cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were reported in 2003, of which 636 had developed acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS). Other estimates have as many as 12,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in 2005.


Religion

The Philippines is predominantly Roman Catholic because of the Spanish influence when they colonized the country. More than 80% of the population are Christians: about 70% belong to the Roman Catholic Church while 8% belongs various denominations such as Baptist, Protestants, Methodist, Iglesia ni Cristo, the Philippine Independent Church, United Church of Christ in the Philippines and Jehovah's Witnesses. As of 2012 Muslims were a minority reported as comprising 5–11% of the population, most of whom live in parts of Mindanao, Palawan, and the Sulu Archipelago – an area known as the Moroislamic region. Buddhism is practiced by 1% of the populations, and together with Taoism and Chinese folk religion it is dominant in Chinese communities. There are smaller number of followers of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Judaism and Baha'i. Less than one percent of the population is non-religious.
