Quotations from William Borden

Do we choose to enjoy the comfort of life or sacrifice for the sake of Christ?

How many of us are willing to dedicate our life to be prepared to follow the Lord's command?

These were the words he wrote at the back of his Bible before he died. He was one of the very few people who are privilege to be wealthy but dedicated his life in service for the Lord. His family and him did not consider this a waste of time or energy. It is a valuable work for a God who is worthy.

William Whiting Borden was a Christian missionary to Northern China. he grew up in affluence, the son of the founder of Borden, Inc., which is widely known for its food products.
His parents sent him on a trip around the world when he was 16. He traveled to Europe, Asia and Africa. He would later come to denounce his fortune in favor of missions. He decided that he wanted to be a missionary to Muslims in the Kansu area of China. So, he sailed off to Egypt to learn Arabic and learn more about Islam and the culture where he was headed. During his time in Egypt, he contracted spinal meningitis and died. He never made it to China. He was just 25 years old. Here is a man who had all the means to care for himself and his family for years and generations to come. Yet, he decided to give it all up to serve Christ, even at the expense of his father telling him he could never work for the family again. What are you willing to sacrifice for missions? Your comfort? Your finances? You social standing? Your life?
